IIT KHARAGPUR is a place with history of freedom fighters of INDIA.As discussed in History page there was a detention camp in Hijli (Kharagpur) which was made the Main Building of IIT Kharagpur.And now it is still rendering service as a Museum, called NEHRU MUSEUM.

NEHRU MUSEUM
The Nehru Museum of Science and Technology is at presnt a museum in Kharagpur. It was founded in 1990 at the Hijli Detention camp building, later the IIT-Kharagpur Heritage Building, which is now named as Hijli Saheed Bhavan. The imposing building, bearing resemblance to the Byzantine style of architecture, was used by the British rulers of India to detain the freedom fighters during the 1930s. MARTYRS MEMORIAL

Commonly referred to as the Monument, the Shahid Minar is located at Esplanade in central Kolkata in the north east facet of the Maidan the tower is 48 m (157 ft) high. It has a foundation based on the Egyptian style.The column is a combination of styles with a classical fluted column, a Syrian upper portion and a Turkish dome.It has two balconies at the top. The top floor of the minar is accessible by a serpentile staircase, a total of 223 steps.It has a total of 218 steps until the top of the tower.The monument was erected by Burn & Company.

For daily necessities and groceries, one can walk down to the Tech Market. The market also has medicine stores, tailoring shops, bookshops and facilities for photocopying, word-processing and offset printing. A larger market, Gole Bazaar is about 5 km from the Campus.And there is another market called Prembazar to fulfill the dailyneeds.

GYMKHANA

Technology Students' Gymkhana is the nerve center for sports, cultural and social activities. It has a number of indoor and outdoor stadia, a modern swimming pool and a gymnasium. Music Society, Film Society, Dramatics Society, Aquatics Society and many more special interest groups are supported by the Gymkhana.
CENTRAL LIBRARY
IIT Kharagpur's first library was located in a small room of the institute's Old Building (Shaheed Bhawan). At the time of its opening in 1951, the library had a collection of 2,500 books. Now located in the main building of the institute, the Central Library is one of the largest of its type. Its collection includes over 350,000 books and documents, and it subscribes to more than 1,600 printed and online journals and conference proceedings.The library has six halls and a section exclusively for SC and ST students. The library's collection consists of books, reports, conference proceedings, back volumes of periodicals, standards, theses, micro-forms, CD-ROMs, floppies, and audio-visual material. The library's transaction service is automated and online searches are possible through an Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC). The Electronic Library section has a collection of databases, video lectures and miscellaneous other resources.
